While the IBLP advocates claim to adhere to Biblical principles, they go beyond Biblical norms in areas such as applying Old Testament civil laws and dietary restrictions to contemporary family life. IBLP has been compared to a cult by some detractors. Of course, "cult" is a pejorative and has lost its meaning. However, IBLP appears to be very controlling of its members.
People coming out of a controlling environment, such as Amish, fundamentalist Mormon, Hasidic Jewish, Moonie, or similar groups, often loudly denounce their former affiliations.
