The cables we see being buried are large bundles of multi-colored strands. They must be the things that will serve the huge data centers around here.
The cables are interesting and have to be fiber optic. One fiber optic cable has 24 conductors and is equivalent to a braided copper cable 4 feet in diameter. It would take a new copper mine if those cables had to be copper. About a decade ago they laid a fiber cable past my house that ran all the way across the state. It was supposed to support state jobs that were to be moved away from the capitol. Did anybody move? Not a one. But can I connect to it? no chance in heck. For all that geewiz stuff my phones still run on a copper wire.
