In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson awarded Carl Vinson the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1974, President Richard Nixon honored Carl Vinson by naming the nation's third nuclear aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson. The University of Georgia Institute of Public Affairs was renamed the Carl Vinson Institute of Government in 1983.
His support for the Navy included support for Antarctic research, and the 16,500 ft Vinson Massif, the tallest peak in Antarctica, is named after him. The man who was called the father of the two-ocean navy, who served in Congress under eight US presidents, passed away in 1981 at the age of 97.
