My BIL was one of the ones bussed TO a black school, which was about 10% white after the busing. He and his brother didn’t eat or drink until they got home because “it was as much as your life was worth to enter a bathroom”! He also said a white guy picking up a basketball while at school would have put the guy in a hospital. Or morgue.
This was my Junior High School experience exactly. I was bussed 1.5 hours one way to an inner city, formerly all-black school. 1973-74, deep south industrial city. The building was a converted hosiery mill. None of the staff wanted to be there, and little was done to keep order. My history “teacher” was functionally illiterate. It was an exceptionally dangerous environment.
I learned then and there what the reality vs. the feel-good blather about diversity is.
