I have seen that line at least a hundred times lately and each person acts like they thought it up all by themselves.
It could be that their crafts were not designed for what is encountered here. Or, as in Roswell, two or three collided.

It’s as if they think that a species far more technologically advanced than ours is therefore incapable of making a mistake or having an accident.

you’d think such advanced civilizations would have solved the collision problem by now ... heck, with all the work being done on self-driving cars, WE humans might even be able to solve it in OUR lifetime! ... [i suppose at that point, we should benevolently offer our advanced anti-collision technology to any and all space aliens that want it]
