The federal judge in the Luigi Mangione murder trial ruled Monday that a gun and notebook allegedly linking him to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson can be shown to the jury.
The ruling is a blow to the defense, who argued the items were seized illegally because police had not obtained the required search warrant.
CNN’s Kara Scannell reported from the New York City courthouse:
“This was a key ruling in this case. And it came after the suppression hearings occurred in December,” Scannell said, continuing:
The judge saying that the search of Mangione’s backpack at the McDonald’s was illegal, and so certain items there are out. But the key evidence in this case, the alleged murder weapon and a handwriting diaries of Mangione are in. How the judge broke this down, he said that the search at the McDonald’s…it was not “exigent circumstances.” There was no public safety risk involved. There was no concern that he could reach into the backpack, since the officers had moved it far away from them.
And within that search, which is not allowed to come into trial, they found the magazine of the bullets. They also found the his cell phone, his passport, a wallet, and a computer chip. So, none of that evidence can come in. But all the material that was recovered when the backpack was searched back at the station, the judge said that was a legal search. They conducted it pursuant to the Altoona Police Department’s procedures handling an inventory search. So, that means that the gun, the handwritings where Mangione had written about his frustrations with the healthcare industry that he wanted to target insurance, that he said he was going to look at the bean counters. You know, he’s accused of gunning down the UnitedHealthcare CEO just outside of the hotel in Manhattan, where they were holding their annual investor conference. That information, those pieces of evidence can come in.
Mangione is facing both federal and state murder charges. The state murder trial is set to begin Sept. 8, while jury selection for the federal trial, which includes stalking charges, is scheduled to begin Oct. 13.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both cases and faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted in either case.
ya well... I doubt you will find many here that agree with you.
God had NOTHING to do with this.
Satan? most likely
We can't do that.
People who buy this kind of insurance need to know what it pays for. If it is horrible, don't buy it.
No excuse for just killing an executive. Communists and Moose limbs just sneak up (cowardly like this guy did) and kill people who don't do what they like.
Not for Americans to act like this.
And true to form, this guy was not a decent American, rather he was a super-rich, entitled, clueless Communist POS.
Hope he gets the death penalty.
I’m not finding a lot of agreement. I’m looking at both parties and deciding it that way.
That’s a cogent, well thought out argument.
I don’t countenance profiting off of death and suffering without consequence either. Thompson got to the “find out” part.
Ok.
Moral equivalence. Thompson’s evil far outweighs Luigi’s.
AFAIC, your asinine statement means we should be living in Anarchy.
That also means, whatever reason I conjure to justify putting YOUR lights out permanently would be acceptable to you.
GFY Faggot.
So you’re okay with murder then.
Good to know.
So you won’t mind when it happens to you or someone you love.
That’s also good to know

By your reasoning if I break into your home or place of work, and shoot you to death behind your desk because I don’t agree with your job or political bent, I am justified. Is it only behind a desk? How about a kitchen table, at the water cooler, or on your way to/from your car?
Did I get that right?
You are an execrable piece of filth.
It wasn’t done in Thompson’s home or place of work. It was done outside a hotel where he was going to give a speech bragging about how rich he made stockholders by denying claims and care to people who paid their premiums and relied on UHC when they needed to use their insurance.
I don’t associate with vile debris like Brian Thompson.
Luigi’s ‘Mangionistas’ should be stamped and certified insane, not welcomed as ‘press’
The exec didn’t kill anyone. Your claim that he did is false. What the rich spoiled punk did is premeditated, cowardly, assassination.
You’re your own brand of vile debris.
L
If you say so.
