How can rock carvings in a cold, wet, freeze/thaw cycle part of the world survive? Rock crumbles in those conditions.

That must be why there are no rocks up there.

Any rock that is not porous does not crumble with freeze/thaw cycles. Flint is not porous, neither is obsidian. There are others.
