Having grown up with dogs, I am still learning cat. We still have some strays, but they keep a much lower profile. We had a few skunks going after leftovers, so I’m not going to just leave food out.

My family had dogs but no cats when I was growing up. Dogs are like your best friend, instinctively ready to do what you want to do. Cats ask what you can do for them before forming a friendship.

Yet when cats takes you for a friend, they are devoted and trusting. My formerly fearful stray cat now stays indoors and keeps me in sight, looking to me for affection, food, and safety. If he is outdoors, he even comes when I whistle. He is also sweet-tempered, as if he appreciates his new life. Not bad for a stray.

Worse than skunks are coyotes, which are now a problem in most of the country. Cats are a favorite meal, but they will also munch on any food that is put out for pets. The smell alone will draw them.
