I think they assumed as I did that the father was an adult. Appears he is also a teen just one year older. Not sure what the laws are re:statutory rape when both are under the age of 16 and just one year apart in age.

Statutory rape is rape. In Mississippi, the age at which an individual can legally consent to engage in sexual intercourse — also known as the “age of consent” — is 16 years old.
