Headlines for stories like these should read Man dressed as Woman, not trans woman. Nobody would call a guy dressed up as Bigfoot a trans Bigfoot. They would call him a man dressed up as Bigfoot.

I agree completely but usually reporters are required to follow the Associated Press Style Guidelines unless their organization has it’s on Guidelines like the NYT. IOW, this practice can only be stopped when the Guidelines are changed.
