Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere just hit a ‘depressing’ new record
Sci Am ^ | 5/5/26 | Adam Kovac

These data come from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Mauna Loa Observatory, which may soon be shut down because of proposed government budget cuts

The amount of carbon dioxide detected in the atmosphere hit a record high in April. CO2 levels averaged about 431 parts per million (ppm) over that month, according to data collected at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii.

Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, are measured as a proportion of the total atmosphere. The numbers are presented as the number of molecules of a particular gas out of a million total molecules, or ppm.

Climate scientist Zachary Labe of Climate Central, a nonprofit that researches climate change, says the new record is “depressing” but not unexpected.

“It’s just another sign that carbon dioxide continues to increase in our atmosphere as our planet continues to warm,” he says. “For many climate scientists, this is just ‘here it is again, another record in the wrong direction.’”

Labe explains that the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere tends to peak in April each year as decaying plants release greenhouse gases after winter. Some of that CO2 gets reabsorbed by plants as they grow during the warmer months. But NOAA’s data show a worrying trend, with the average monthly amount of CO2 steadily increasing.

Well, chop down trees and cover up cropland and pasture with solar power cells, and of course less CO2 is taken out of the atmosphere. Remove all the acres of solar panels, plant Kudzu, and watch the CO2 levels drop.

Why is it depressing? Carbon is life. Carbon dioxide is plant food. This is a good thing.

...and look! Temperatures in the 50s in Georgia, in May!

And agriculture benefits. For that reason CO2 levels must be reduced to 50ppm or less in order to rapidly reduce the excess population. Bill Gates would like that.

It wouldn’t hurt to replace kudzu with nettles. They’re edible if prepared properly.

God forbid that plants might more so thrive as they have more “food”. You will eat pebbles and be happy! These eco-loons are sooooooooooooooo tiresome.

I used to have a recipe book for kudzu - the leaves for salads or cooked greens, the roots for starches. Vines were waste. Never actually ate any, stayed away from poke sallet as well.

431 ppm CO2??? That’s nothing.

Annie was pleased.

The funniest thing about the response to global warming, which is to go all green and renewable energy and reducing carbon dioxide emissions, is that all of those efforts and sacrifices have had absolutely no effect whatsoever on the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

I used to test both the ambient atmosphere as a base line when I was monitoring controlled atmosphere storage rooms to check my analyzer. I did this for 20 plus years. Every year the analyzer, after calibration, would show the nitrogen level to be 78% and the oxygen level to be 21%. Finally the carbon level would be .04%. Year in and year out, through out the months, always the same with just minor deviations.

MY lawn loves carbon in the atmosphere.

Oddly the data from Mauna Loa is good. What is not good is the global warming hypothesis. It is a scam.

Agreed.

The Chicken Littles in the Climate industry might also look up
“saturation Curve” as it applies to CO2. The higher the concentration
of carbon dioxide, the less efficient it is as a “greenhouse
gas”.

“CO2 in the atmosphere tends to peak in April each year as decaying plants release greenhouse gases after winter”

So, another interpretation is that the world is getting “greener” right? There’s more vegetation, capturing CO2...like it’s designed to do, the world having self-correcting mechanisms. Color me shocked.

Sea levels will rise, giving those dolphins and orcas lots of room to cavort around in! Polar bears can work on their tans! Fish and plankton will thrive! Mangos and pineapples will grow further north, maybe as far as Canada. Able-bodied men will find work setting up sea walls, laying down pilings to build dykes and harbor locks on! Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Long Island, the Carolina barrier islands, will be buzzing with activity. Hurray for global warming!

If only they realized over the last 9,000 years the temperature of the Earth has been declining while CO2 has been going up! LOL!

What’s even funnier the global warming spikes happen every 100K to 120K years.

Almost all flora and fauna went extinct back in the 1700s-1800s during the Little Ice Age when the CO2 level was down to 282ppm and all life goes extinct at 150ppm or less!

These Leftists want everything killed and destroyed.
