There was a girl about 13 riding a heavy motorized bike with fat tires on our downtown sidewalks a month ago. I was sitting on a bench on the street and she zoomed by inches from me. She turned around and was headed back my way, so I stood up and blocked her way, then read her the riot act, told her it was illegal to ride like that on sidewalks, and to get off the sidewalk. She taken aback that somebody disciplined her. She got a little bit apologetic (with that condescending, rude "I'm soorrrryyyyy" huffy and snotty attitude) but she did move to the street.

While I didn't think about running her over, I have to admit this DID come to mind...

I know this is off topic because we are talking about motorized bikes, but I recently had this little discussion in a bar. I don’t know how it even came up, but I actually sympathize with cyclists (specially kids) who would rather ride on the sidewalk rather than the street. The streets a friggin dangerous, particularly these days with people burying their face in their cell phones (which is illegal in many places but people still do it).

When I was a kid, we rode our bikes anywhere any everywhere. Streets, sidewalks, off road, across peoples yards. Occasionally you might get someone shouting and shaking their fist at you, but for the most part, people weren’t uptight about kids on bikes.
