These hyperscale datacenters are an environmental disaster.
There’s too many of them.
Government should build just TWO very big centers and invite all the AI companies to do their development in them.
But the idea META, MS, Amazon, etc. all need 10 mega centers as they compete against each other is detrimental to the environment in real terms.
Eventually laptops will be powerful enough to do most AI tasks, without needing to go to the cloud, and use the datacenters.
They may eventually converted into homeless shelters.
Private industry knows best how to do AI for Private Industry. Far fewer worthless government dei types. Let Gov. do its own data centers for gov. Concerns.
If AI development is as important as the Manhattan Project, why has our leadership shut down large wind power projects that are as much as 80% finished? Is this because Xi plans coal use for energy, or because Putin has relayed strange ideas about Holland and Don Quixote.
How soon are laptops likely to be powerful enough to make big data centers unnecessary? I just saw a news flash that a number of our biggest companies have just made an agreement with our government. Does anyone here know, understand, or suspect what this is all about?
Even if powerful laptops quickly reduce need for giant data centers, what about the power needs for making Bitcoin type products? In Iran the IRGC has already been taking power from hospitals and areas of cities so they can make Bitcoin for the money they need to keep their power. Apparently our leader and family are very interested in Bitcoins. However various actions seem very inconsistent with apparent goals. What is really going on?
