When I first got into the computer game, I had only a keyboard. Using the then-available (and affordable) Microsoft Works program, it was set up so that you could use a keyboard or mouse to navigate.

For example, if I wanted to save a file that I was working on, a document or whatever, I’d hit the ALT key which highlighted the menu bar at the top, then “F” to pull down the file menu list, then “S” to save. If I hadn’t saved it yet, I would hit “A” to save-as and type in a name for the new file.

Very easy and my hands never left “home row” on the keyboard. Anybody that took typing in the 70s knows that home row is where you park your hands so the the keys you want to type are where they should be and you can type away without looking.

I’ve not found a better way to do the functions than the old keyboard shortcuts that I learned before I ever had a mouse, and I don’t really like web sites where you have to use a mouse to navigate while trying to fill out a form on line. My typing teacher would be turning over in her grave with the invention of the mouse. Even though it’s a great tool for navigating when you are NOT wanting to type out text.

Next pet peeve - laptops almost never have the numeric keypad on the right side. It’s essential for book keeping and accounting tasks.
