I first heard it on the US Armed Forces Network (AFN) station in Frankfurt, Germany, when I was living in Darmstadt. Although the station's playlist was strictly Adult Contemporary, somehow, this Top 40 tune snuck onto it. As it was March, 1966, when all the leaves were still brown and spring hadn't yet arrived--and I'm a native Californian--the song hit a home run with me.
