On April 18, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was alerted to a family who was searching for a 49-year-old woman.

The woman, who had a traumatic brain injury, was reported missing after she failed to return home from a walk.

Authorities searched for hours but had no luck tracking the woman down. That’s when deputies decided to call in Keva and Naji, two bloodhounds they hoped could help lead them to the woman.

Working off a scent from the woman’s pillow, Naji and Keva set off quickly, hot on the trail.

“She’s on a 15-foot leash attached to her harness and she’s pulling me down this mountain pretty quickly,” said Deputy Gabriel Jasso, Keva’s handler.

About a half mile in, Jasso hears a woman calling for help.

The woman had suffered a medical emergency and had fallen 200 feet down a ravine in the Running Springs area. She was in an area of dense brush, making it difficult to spot her, had it not been for the K-9s

I grew up with dogs. Dogs are cool. Cats are more complex. That’s NOT a dig against dogs or dog owners. Opening a bag of shrimp is the fastest way to find out where kitty is hiding.

One would need a battery powered electric can opener for a cat to find you.

A recording would work. "There's an app for that."

Our cats come when they hear any pull-top can being opened, just in case it’s something they might want to eat.

Mr. GG2 is from that area. He used to hike and camp there as a child. He spent so much time roaming those mountains that the LA Sheriff’s dept used to call on him as a tracker for missing persons from time to time. I think he was only 15 years old. He told me those mountains are really rough terrain.

Cats are arrogant food processers.

Hate cats. Have always hated those sneaky things since my brother's cat killed my pet bird back in the fifties.

I killed that cat and never had a moment of regret.
