On Monday, Florida changed its state welfare policy to exclude junk food from being purchased with SNAP funds.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is meant to help needy people buy food by using tax money to give them supplemental nutrition.

The state of Florida is not telling residents that they can't buy soda and ice cream with their own money. It's telling them they can't use money taken from other Floridians to buy those items. You are free to be morbidly obese on your own dime.

There are a million of these rage bate videos on YouTube. They are funny but ultimately focus on the wrong issue. To be blunt, the issue is not black people wanting to buy ice cream on food stamps. The issue is a massive government entitlement program that reaches way into the middle class - including a massive number of white people who have a vested interest in voting to preserve it. Its the biggest entitlement fraud going. Obama turned it into a middle-class entitlement, and it hasn’t been cut back since. Food Stamps needs to be cut back substantially. Not just ice cream and junk food. But everything. It should only be for the poorest of the poor and only temporary for them.

more useful than massive lists of “foods” ineligible with SNAP, would be a simple list of foods that are eligible:

all forms of legumes (excluding added sweetener forms)

vegetables and fruits in all forms (excluding added sweetener forms as well as all fruit juice)

all WHOLE grains (excluding added sweetener forms)

milk and milk products in all forms (excluding added sweetener forms)

eggs in all forms

seed flours and breads, both risen and flat in all forms (excluding fried forms such as chips as well as all added sweetener forms)

all nuts (excluding added sweetener forms)

cooking oils and fats (excluding semi-synthetic forms such as anything made with hydrogenated oils)

baking supplies and seasonings

all free government food should only be provided by government pantries and only give basic food so that people wont starve.

The most stupid thing - and that's a high bar - that the government does is give cash (or equivalent, like a SNAP credit card) to people who have demonstrated that they cannot manage their own finances.

I don't want anyone to starve, but people who have demonstrated they can't manage their own finances have to earn the right to make their own decisions.

So soup kitchens or pantries financed by the funding that currently support SNAP would be better for everyone. For the taxpayer, there would be less waste with a focus on nutritious, cost-effective foods.

For the person on SNAP, they would be helped with obesity problems and taught that you earn the right to make choices.

And for those of us how have earned that right, prices would fall on the non-nutritious foods we want. :-)
