SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — An American YouTuber who sparked national outrage in South Korea for provocative stunts, including dancing on a statue honoring victims of wartime sexual slavery, was sentenced to six months in prison Wednesday.

The Seoul Western District Court found Ramsey Khalid Ismael, a self-proclaimed internet “troll” known online as Johnny Somali, guilty of multiple charges, including obstruction of business and distributing fabricated sexually explicit content.

Prosecutors had sought a three-year term for Ismael, who also faced accusations of harassing staff and visitors at an amusement park, disrupting a convenience store by blasting music and upending noodles onto a table, causing similar scenes on a bus and subway, and distributing non-consensual deepfake videos.

The court said the 25-year-old displayed “severe” disrespect for South Korean law, noting that he offended countless people with livestreamed stunts aimed at generating YouTube revenue. The court ordered his immediate detention following the verdict, citing him as a flight risk.

Good. He’s Somali trash and I do mean trash. I only wish they’d have locked his miserable azz up longer than they did. He’s been an insufferably obnoxious A-hole for years in numerous countries.

I’ve seen some of this A’hole’s antics and I’m surprised he hasn’t been slapped till he’s dead. SK should have given him 10 years at the least.

He’s a flaming asshole. Six months in a South Korean prison, that’s equivalent to 10 years in an American. In the future, he’ll be watching cool hand, Luke, wishing he would’ve had it that easy.

hopefully he learns a valuable lesson from this, but I doubt it

He won't. He spent three months in a Japanese jail for doing the same thing. One would think that would have taught him a lesson because Japanese jails are not country clubs. But when he was kicked out of Japan, he went to Israel and acted the same way. However, he quickly got out of there and escaped Israeli justice.

Maybe not in spirit but he’s technically American if he’s using a US passport. Tax dollars are probably being used to give him whatever consular aid he’s entitled to.

I like the way that Singapore dealt with some entitled bastard tourist who spray-painted and urinated on a random car. They gave him a bamboo pole flogging that he'll never forget. This clown deserves the same.

Some may say that's cruel and unusual punishment. Personally, I'd rather get the flogging than rot in prison - it saves society the costs of incarceration, it allows the perp to go on living and working but with a lesson hopefully learned.

By his own admission, Ramsey Khalid is an enigma wrapped in a lie coated with deceptions. A mean spirited version of former congressman George Santos, he now sitting in prison for lying. He’s lucky that’s all the South Koreans are doing to him. They already don’t like him because he’s not Korean.

National outrage gets you thrown in prison in South Korea.

I approve of this.

Definitely he has been.

But now he messed around and found out that the criminal justice system in most Asian countries is far less soft on crime than that of most Western countries.
