Don't forget Brave New World, its model of the state keeping the masses in line with bread and circus is closer to reality in most western country than Orwell's vision of a boot on your neck. No need for concentration camps or mass executions if you can keep people obedient and happy with welfare hand-outs, trashy mass entertainment, and lots of booze and junk food.
