The statement by the defense was
"...the bullet could not be matched to the gun..."
NOT that it didn't match,
BUT that it could not be matched.
The bullet was too damaged to match ANY gun.

Evidence does not exclude that rifle.
It was determined that the bullet was the same caliber and type that would be fired from that rifle.
