You have to suspect that at first some powerful person in the California Democratic Party hierarchy came to Swalwell and told him to drop out or the scandal would be revealed. He did not take the “offer that cannot be refused”, so it was revealed.

I figured the same thing. The party was outspoken that “someone” or someones needed to drop out; makes sense that they would make him an offer that they THOUGHT he wouldn’t refuse. He proved them wrong, much to my delight.

That reminds me of the so called Death Angel visits in the past to GOP Congressmen and Senators who suddenly announced they were retiring to spend more time with their families after being smiling and active with plans the day before.
