The simple answer is no... There are a lot of ‘complex’ pop songs out there... ‘Macarthur Park’ for instance... In my humble opinion that would be the most complex pop song ever.

I am of the opinion that a lot of second tier singers and performers are given one song they get to own, even if they are not technically as good as other performers. Richard Harris sold MacArthur Park like no one else has since. Other songs that are "owned" are Roy Clark (top tier guitarist, but only good as a singer) owns "Yesterday, When I was Young". Julie London owns "Cry Me a River", Dolly Parton owns "Jolene". Lynn Anderson owns "Rose Garden".
