IIRC, the Newark riots were in 1967. I was working a summer engineering job in Palo Alto. I rented a room in a fraternity on the Stanford campus. In the late afternoon we’d sometimes watch Roller Derby on what was likely a 12 inch portable black and white TV. A newsbreak interruption came on with videos of the first tank deployments. Before the announcer said a word I remember thinking, “Hey, that looks like Springfield Avenue.”
Oh, yeah, and down Broad St. also.
