Having lived in ABQ in the mid ‘90s I’ll say this, Breaking Bad and BCS really captured the flavor of it. But it’s not all TV show there.
All of the territory north of Fanta Se is notoriously dangerous country. East of the Manzanos too.
I see you live in AZ. I’m not sure NM holds a candle to what goes on there. But you can step into the wild west in a heartbeat in either state.

I have mostly remained city-bound since moving here almost eight years ago. Even here, there was a javalina in the lot of a Motel 6 on Ray Road, and we would have had roof rats in north central Phoenix had it not been for our kitties. In my workplace in Scottsdale, I had seen both a road runner AND a coyote, but not at the same time.
My wife felt far more threatened by the fire ants that abounded in Columbus, GA.
I was bemused by the presence of "New Mexican style" restaurants here. Which, as far as I can tell is the same as the Arizona food, only with green chiles.
