There is a lot of empty country just South of there. Turnpike passes through with no turnouts for miles.
I just looked at a satellite photo view. Blanco is small and impressively remote, with a great deal of forest and undeveloped country around it and even more nearby. A vulnerable human family appearing suddenly would look like a gift to an inexperienced juvenile predator looking make to a kill.
