Grocery stores operate on very tight margins, typically about 2%. Labor is the largest single cost so the Legislature, by adding to labor costs, will simply be increasing grocery prices. Of course they could emulate neighboring New York and force government run groceries. We all know how that will work out.
Although, here in NH & MA we have a company called Marketbasket owned by the Demoulas family. It is the best grocery chain in New England. They do not have ANY self checkout lanes. They also have a great profit sharing plan for their employees. To the point that many of their long time employees are millionaires from working in the meat department. They all wear name tags with how many years they have worked there. All the managers are 30+ years.
They are also the least expensive grocery store in the area with the exception of maybe Aldi. Marketbasket is also typically cheaper than Walmart. MB is much cheaper than Shaws or Hannaford. The other major New England grocery chains.
