To say things like this are overprescribed is an understatement. Especially when it comes to boys.
Case in point: When I was about four years old (75yo now), my grandmother told me she would give me a dollar if I could sit still for one minute. I never saw that buck. :)
LOL...we told our son at ages 4-8 or so that we’d pay him a buck on family car trips if he could keep quiet for a minute. We never paid him, either.
We also gave the two older girls and our sons about $5 in quarters at the start of the trip. If they asked “Are we there yet?” or “How much longer” they would have to pay us $0.25. The girls always arrived with all $5 and our son was broke.
I know what I was like in grade-school. I can make a good guess as to what I (as a child) would be "diagnosed" with starting in the early 1990s. I'm glad the educational-psychological syndicate wasn't as powerful when I was a child as it is now.
Adults have the same problem. They think they are ‘in control’ of themselves.
I tell them, “bet you can’t be quiet for 1 minute”.
They say, “yes I can”.
I say, “wasn’t even five seconds.”
They say,”I can too. This isn’t fair.”
I say, “still talking ?”
They say, ......
On and on it goes and they never shut up.
I am an advocate of the Oriental wisdom.
MASTER THYSELF!
I’m working on it.
Yep - I’m 73 and today I would be “diagnosed” and drugged.
I was forced to learn to deal with it and adapt. I’m above average IQ (but no genius) and my mind stays active and takes in everything happening around me (the ultimate in situational awareness) - I learned to act more like others while retaining the active mind....even today, if I want to actually concentrate on someone’s speech, I have to close my eyes to stop paying attention to all the visual stimuli...but I can be reading a book or typing a message and still hear and grasp/retain what my wife is asking/telling me - or do a crossword while keeping track of a movie on the TV...
