I had an SPD politician as a neighbor long back, who was quite the same. The national media's propaganda used against the Alternative für Deutschland has been going on since about the time Germany gave up its sovereignty by adopting the Euro as currency, abandoning the Deutschmark ( still have some as souvenirs, including a shiny fiver coin ).
In that time, another and far more pleasant fellow with whom I still speak, asked why I held the AfD in a positive light. I gave that answer. The introduction of the Euro handed over to the ECB part of Germany's entire identity. Today, decades later, he sees that the loss of the Deutschmark was a loss for Germany. Took decades to make obvious.
By the way, when I was in the big hall of the Bundestag, the seats were colored by party, and none of the other parties wanted to sit next to the AfD. Why? They all realized what it would mean someday. And is beginning to be obvious.
National socialism -- which they try continually to make into "right wing" -- was after all socialist. Every time I'd a little chat with my German colleagues of that time, I'd mention the simple language truth. It was always flummoxing.
People never think about names, much. After all, Darmstadt in Hesse breaks down into "intestine city." Nazi is so easy to throw around, until one spells it out. In English, "National Socialist German Workers' Party."
