There was a time when you'd hear jazz programming on AM
stations. At night the signals would travel far and wide.
I remember falling asleep listening to WHAM 1180 and WMAL
630, both which were jazz stations way back in the day.

WHAM Key Jazz Programs and Personalities

• Harry Abraham: Known as the "King of Jazz" in Rochester, his show "The Best of All Possible Worlds" aired overnight from midnight to 5:00 AM or 5:30 AM. Abraham was highly regarded for his deep knowledge of the genre, spanning all sty les of jazz and frequently hosting top musicians for live interviews.

  His broadcast reach was extensive due to WHAM's status as a clear channel station, allowing the signal to be heard across much of the United States and parts of Canad a during the night.

• Bill Ardis: Another notable figure in the 1960s was Bill Ardis, who hosted a program titled "Ardis Against the Night ," which also featured jazz and "Great American Songbook" style music during the overnight hours.

• Will Moyle: Moyle was another major jazz voice on Rochester radio during this period, often cited alongside Abraham as a key influencer of the local jazz scene.

My local public radio plays jazz every night from 6pm to midnight. FM.

Classical the rest of the time.

Nothing but music.

Oh, and they’ll play the Metropolitan Opera Matinee tomorrow at 10am PST.
