I think it’s a vibration problem, not electrical shock.
It’s odd and not explained why electric motors create a vibration problem. Guess something’s out of balance.
Or maybe the current supplied to the motor is spikey, causing torsional vibration.
I'm betting it's pulse modulation. Really fast high current digital to analog converters are non trivial.
The internal combustion engine is creating a vibration that is destroying the battery. It is not clear what in the IC engine is causing the vibration.
These are EV racers?? No interest, then.

Some commenters are just beyond hope.
Just guessing, but it sounds like it could be the regenerative braking. More power is now coming from the electric, which will tend to run down the battery too quickly, so maybe they’re trying something new to try and charge the battery faster.
