I remember what it was like, those 444 days. I was fresh out of the military, and the shame and anger I felt that we didn’t fight back is still raw today.
Oddly, one of the few things I EVER gave Carter credit for was the failed Operation Eagle Claw attempt. At least he tried, and that failure was the birth of the integrated operations capability we possess today.
Without that we wouldn’t be here.
Yeah, I still feel the anger. I felt the anger afresh about a month ago when my wife and I watched the movie “Miracle on Ice” and I heard Carter giving his ‘Malaise” speech. Burned me. Again.
And I remembered the news reports, showing the Iranians poking around in the wreckage at Desert One, and it filled me with anger at the memory. Again.
Did you also notice that Jack Hughes was the last player scratched from that 1980 Olympic Gold team...and that Jack Hughes shot the game winner for the 2026 Olympic Gold team?
