FWIW the full name is Fort Irwin National Training Center. It gets used by everbody, not just Marines. and it’s clear up in the Mojave-—quite a ways from Pendleton/29 Palms. Being out in the desert that’s what it’s good for, not amphibious stuff. And there’s an Army unit that is the permanent “opposing force”. There’s a job we don’t hear much about. Those guys have to learn everything wrong?
Had to refresh my memory: the standing opposing force at Ft. Irwin is the Black Horse Cavalry, 11th Armored Cav.
It is about 45 minutes N of the Palms by helo. Their resident OPFOR is really good.
The OPFOR at NTC is the 11th ACR (Armored Cavalry Regiment).
