They've been trying to ensnare the US via an Article 5 for a while. However, on the bolded bit: absent an attack on the US, if DC were to do that, I would suspect 'civil unrest' in the US would ensue (from the productive folks). I think even the Democrats aren't that stupid.

I think the point here is not so much to have Trump intervene as it is to use the issue to win Democrat control of the House and Senate and then impeach President Trump for not intervening. Bottom line is nothing happens until either Zelensky is gone, the Ukraine falls apart or Russia makes a big military offensive move And 7000 people a week die for nothing until it gets resolved.
