Some race swapping of roles is agenda driven. Ideologues look to put non-whites in white roles for no reason beyond the race swap. That is wrong and should be opposed. But I think conservatives have a knee-jerk opposition to race swapping that isn’t right either. There are good artistic reasons to take a classic and change the characters and setting. Also, it is a valid point that we live in a multi-cultural world and having non-whites in roles in classic Western plays and literary adaptations expands the reach of those works of art to a broader audience. If a play or adaptation is good, I don’t care if the races of characters are swapped.
