Space X will land on the moon in a few years, they need to document one of the landing sites. Several man made objects have landed on the moon in the last 50 years. The Soviet Lunokhod rovers, and more recent missions like China’s Chang’e series, which includes landers and rovers, as well as NASA’s Artemis program vehicles. Who can forget Japan’s
SLIM lunar lander that tipped over on touchdown, but still captured imagery of the moon.

Bezos Blue Origin’s Blue Moon 1b, via the SLS, will be there long before SpaceX attempts its first proof of concept with an unmanned lander. China will likely be there before either.
