Elon Musk revealed the future of quantum computing will be on the Moon's permanently shadowed craters

Quantum computing need extreme cold and near-perfect isolation to work

The Moon’s permanently shadowed craters offer exactly that

- Temperatures stay below −200°C, keeping qubits stable without massive Earth-based cooling systems

- No atmosphere, no weather, no day–night cycles. Hardware stays in a steady, undisturbed state

- No air, no vibrations, no human electromagnetic noise - meaning quantum information survives longer with fewer errors

The Moon is not just for exploration It is actually a perfect home for the future of computing

In simpleton terms, are you saying that there’s no forced air heat exchangers in space? (Because there’s no air to move?)

It’s kind of hard to get rid of excess heat in a vacuum, Elon.

Somewhat harder but not a lot. Most heat loss occurs via (electromagnetic) radiation. Does not require a medium like air or water. Only 15% or so is via convection (requires a surrounding fluid).

“It’s kind of hard to get rid of excess heat in a vacuum, Elon. But what do I know.”

Not much about quantum cooling.

Quantum computing produces little heat compared to conventional computing.

We'll see.

Well this is all very interesting, and likely technically sound. And according to tech leaders like Musk, space exploration and things like this are the supposed future of humanity, which would have enthralled me when I was younger.

However, now as an older and stout believer of God, and the Bible myself, I wonder how this all squares with the lessons we are given in the scripture. I don’t recall any urging being given to us to pursue the moon, for additional computing power, much less cohabitating Mars. And in THAT light, I don’t find this too high of a priority.

That super fine moon dust that gets into everything says ‘ good luck with that.’

Listen, the heat-generating computing elements on the moon are going to be sealed/packaged and not directly exposed to the heat-sucking black of space.

There’s going to have to be some sort of recirculating fluid flow to get the heat out of the processor/component enclosure to where radiative cooling is available.

Nothing in the Bible about cars, trains, planes or the internet.

True, but none of that existed, either. The moon, did.

Prior comment maybe incomplete: Conductive heat transfer from processors to space-exposed radiating metal plates seems like it may not scale. Hence maybe also using forced gas or liquid flow to meet cooling requirements.

Only the authors didn’t know the real moon.

Oh really.

Put up a link to something useful quantum computing has done. Here, or on the moon. Anywhere.

Actually useful. Making a profit, not just extracting money out of investors.

So, you are changing the subject knowing you were wrong about quantum computing and radiation cooling ...
