Few Americans realize how Washington helped create the EU, starting with the Marshall plan, all eager to get rid of nation states.

It started as the European Coal and Steel Community. Actually, it was a good idea at the time.

Benelux was already underway in 1944. In 1944. A customs union designed to remove borders.

All their shennanigans were to impose an economic unity over the nation state. One or another declaration was typed up that hoped to root out war and plant a "common foundations for economic development."

I supose there are various reasons that makes a government legitimate, one of them economic. No doubt a strong one in secular age.
