Snow in FLORIDA as 'bomb cyclone' wreaks carnage across south east with worst blizzards in decades
Daily Mail UK ^ | February 1, 2026 | James Gordon

A powerful snowstorm is bringing chaos to parts of the country not accustomed to treacherous cold conditions.

More than 35 million Americans were under extreme weather warnings as a bomb cyclone, a kind of 'winter hurricane' that generates violent winds when air pressure drops quickly, swept in.

States including the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia have been worst affected, with snow seen falling as far south as Tampa, Florida. In central Florida temperatures as low as the high teens are possible. At this time of year thermometers are more typically hitting the 70s.

There has been havoc on the roads, with North Carolina alone suffering 750 car crashes on Saturday, according to highway patrol.

Around 100 vehicles were left stranded in the snow along a northbound section of Interstate 85 north of Charlotte, North Carolina, where more snow fell in a single day on Saturday than the city has seen in two decades.

A late afternoon crash involving a car and a tractor-trailer led to only one lane being open along the road near Kannapolis. That in turn caused long traffic jams just as heavy snow began accumulating on the highway, North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

Snow fell so quickly it caused tractor-trailers and cars on I-85 to become stuck, stranding drivers.

'Once they're blocking the interstate, everybody stops,' North Carolina State Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Christopher Knox told CBS 17. 'We're just limited in what we can do because of the interstate not being physically passable.'

The good news... In a day or two it will melt... Try putting up with cold and snow on a daily basis from December until March and sometimes April.

I recall Mother’s Day shoveling of both 1977 and 1996. One as kid having fun. The other as an adult not enjoying a day of work outside.

Seattle news media have self-consciously dumped "bomb cyclone" for "atmospheric river."

We had heavy rain in western Washington in the first half of January that caused flooding.

A year ago, we had 7 inches of snow in the Biloxi area - and a few years before that, there was an ice storm that had interstates in MS, Alabama (and possibly I-10 across northern Florida) frozen under ice...weather - it’s been happening ever since God said, “Let there be light...”

I hope those affected will be sure to watch Hochul’s very helpful videos on how to shovel snow, and how to use kitty litter for traction.

She made them to educate her NY constituents — because they’re clueless about dealing with snow. ( 😉 ) But residents all over the world can benefit from her profundity.

It’s 6:10 AM here in SW Montana and it’s 37 F - will hit 52 F today.

The deciduous trees buds are swelling and we have little snow on the ground...I guess the jet stream is just a bit east of us for a normal winter...

I am concerned about the trees...

Where’s Greta Thunberg these days?

Whenever there’s a winter storm she seems to disappear.

I am sure when it is 100 degrees in the shade during July or August Greta will begin lecturing us all again.

Snowed a bit at my house in the Tampa Bay area...

But didn't Al Gore said that snow would not be around after 2015 because of globally warming?

It starts snowing here in late September. It sticks in October. It stays until late April or Early May.

yup. Sometimes October to April. We got about three inches of snow last night. But as the great ones always do, I powered through and made it to Menards.

Nope, un-possible. Al Gore told me snow would stop being a thing in 2011.
