Democrats in Washington state are pushing new legislation that would require school districts to give students excused absences for protesting. The bill was proposed the same day hundreds of Seattle Public School students walked out of class and marched downtown, blocking traffic to protest ICE.
House Bill 2732 was introduced by Democratic Representatives Osman Salahuddin and Gregory “Greg” Dylan Nance and would mandate that districts grant students up to one excused absence each academic term for what the legislation calls “civic engagement activities.”

A wanted violent and dangerous suspect who posed as a US Secret Service agent is now deceased following a Saturday morning officer-involved shooting in Portland, Oregon. The subject allegedly opened fire on Portland Police officers during the execution of a warrant, resulting in the exchange of gunfire, according to a press release.
Authorities said the suspect entered a grocery store in the 1300 block of Northwest Lovejoy Street on January 31 and pointed a handgun at one of the security guards. The suspect, who falsely claimed he was a US Secret Service agent, pulled the trigger, but the gun did not fire. Security officers wrestled with the suspect before he fled the scene.
