McCartney is, well, McCartney. Truly a genius of his craft.
When I think McCartney as a songwriter, I always smile at the backstory of “Silly Love Songs”, which went to No 1 with the following chorus
I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you
“I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you“
LOL. I’m no McCartney but I personally have a songwriting history with that absolutely hackneyed lyric. For years I’d been trying for a million seller via songwriting. At some point I decided to write a simple catchy maybe even brainless powerpop tune, a variety I’d always admired but had never successfully attempted, mainly due to an inability to gin up verse lyrics. My spec for the chorus was, of course, “I love you”.
Finally I settled on writing about the “thunderbolt” as described in The Godfather. This would facilitate the chorus wonderfully. We’ll long story short if I asked a listener which song out of ten was a favorite…you guessed it “I Love you”. If only I could have gotten McCartney to sing it…
