It was because of the teacher. One of the other Astronauts was female. There would have been no coverage for the rest of the Astronauts, Still no excuse. They knew it was too cold, They should have waited.
IIRC, schools around the country were going to watch the launch, I wonder if this was part of the reason NASA felt so much pressure to do the launch, and not delay?
