I’d like to think most of those lines would be fiber, not so easy to tap without breaking, and no signal leech.

Reminds me of when Russia tried to build a new Consulate in San Francisco in about 1990, right in the path of of the telecom microwave link from Silicon Valley to San Francisco and the world.

The relevant microwave antenna was on the highest building in Mountain View, where I lived and worked at the time. Given my job, I was briefed on all the juicy details.

They were not allowed to build a consulate in a location that would allow them to intercept all telecommunications from Silicon Valley.
