When he left SNL, he changed instantly. All he did to be funny is act silly and make funny faces. And everyone says he was a nightmare to work with. He did a few movies with Goldie Hawn, and even she says she never really liked him. I liked the first Vacation movie he did, but none of the others were very enjoyable to me.
I liked Foul Play and Seems Like Old Times.
Chevy I was never a big fan of.
Vacation 1 was the best of later comedy films, but some was funnier to others. Being a car guy, the NY City scene was dead-pan funny.
I got a sore gut from laughing so much.
“Well, we’re here!”
“How do you like your hamburger helper?”
I never stayed up for SNL, though...
Agree with your assessment of Chevy Chase, and enjoyed everyone here dumping on him.
Still I think the left canceled him for the sins of having made black and gay based jokes and cast members making an issue.
Otherwise they would have put him on stage at the SNL anniversary. I don’t think being a talentless jerk was the reason.
Wasn't Chevy Chase's original MO doing physical comedy, and didn't he hurt his back doing so? (IIRC it was imitating President Ford falling down stairs.) It may be that Chase had trouble coming up with a new MO for comedy that didn't involve physical stunts.
