IBM was talking about the possibility of orbiting computing satellites back in the 1980s. I actually heard a story on NPR about it, back then.

Believe it or not, once upon a time NPR was delightful to listen to. More than 40 years ago.

BTW, the temperature of deep space is about 3 Kelvins. Much too hot for quantum computing. The JWST has to use helium pulse-tube cooling to get its mid-infrared detector (MIRI) down to 6 Kelvins.

They're definitely going there, ASAP. Not just for the cooling, but because there's "no controlling legal authority."
