Why Quantum Computers Might Never Work
Youtube ^ | 12-31-35 | Sabine Hossenfelder

Quantum computers have made a massive splash over the past years, with quantum computing projects racking up billions of dollars in private and public investment. But according to a small group of physicists, quantum computers will never scale to any meaningful level. Let’s take a look at their reasoning.

Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. I’m not sure how they would overcome that with quantum processors.

IBM isn’t even in the top 10 holdings of the QTUM ETF. Not to say it isn’t a player, just not appearing to be a major one in the industry so far.

BTW, the temperature of deep space is about 3 Kelvins. Much too hot for quantum computing. The JWST has to use helium pulse-tube cooling to get its mid-infrared detector (MIRI) down to 6 Kelvins.

“ Automobiles? Why? I’ve got trusty old Dobbin in the barn!”
They have had battery powered cars for over 100 years and the batteries are still junk. (But now they explode and burn your house down)

Regarding Sabine, I often just don’t get the German sense of humor.

Fun Fact: My Great Grandfather made his fortune in batteries 1895 to 1945! He manufactured lead acid batteries which were used in city street cars, communications (telegraph, then telephone), lake boats, submarines...you name it. He owned a good size factory in Danzig, Germany which was confiscated by the communists in 1945. The company eventually got merged into the Varta battery company.

that’s exactly why I like her. Neil deGrasse Tyson was chosen to be a spokesperson because he is black. Stephen Hawking made people feel bad and so they wanted him to be the smartest person in the world because he’s in a wheelchair. Sabine has a thick accent and she’s no Kardashian, plus, she swears so I like her.

They already work. I’ve seen a first hand demonstration, and on the specific tasks they are programmed to do, they literally blow the performance of standard computers away. What they are limited by, primarily, is the variety of things that they can do. They are not general purpose machines, but rather machines that can only do very specific computations. But those computations can be done at speeds that defy in some ways our understanding of how they were done that quickly in our current dimensional time/space. That’s the other main limitation, but they will eventually make progress on that too, I would suspect.

There’s been some talk about putting data centers out in space because of the cooling problem. Sounds crazy, but maybe not.

They're definitely going there, ASAP. Not just for the cooling, but because there's "no controlling legal authority."

Great theories, but worthless until they are applied and engineered to produce meaningful results. Key trigger is the “just around the corner”, “provided positive result in laboratory testing”, etc.

yes it just seems like they are clinking their champagne glasses together too quickly. It’s like saying we are going to Mars. There are about 100 things we need to discover and engineer before we could ever do that. Unless you could find people who were content with one-way trips.

But yeah, all these amazing things are always around the corner. Gonna upload my mind to a robot. Cure cancer.

“The share of IBM’s revenue since 2017 that comes from quantum computing is 0.2%.”

Their big revenue is services. Outsource your IT departmnt to IBM. IBM ships the jobs to India.
