The price of hamburgers at McDonald’s went up the same amount in the states that have new high minimum wages and the states that don’t. DC or Knoxville doesn’t matter; it’s the same price. The minimum wage in the DC area is $17 an hour; the minimum wage in the Knoxville area is $7 an hour. Same price. And why is that? Because the price is set by what customers are willing to pay for, not how much it cost to reduce. That’s why McDonald’s has ungodly profit margins. And why a franchise fee runs more than a million dollars a year.

I live in central Illinois in a university town. The going rate for fast food workers was somewhere around $12 per hour back around 2008 when the the great recession hit. Nobody works for $7 a hour these days.
