When are they going to change the name of Brown University? The Brown family was involved in the slave trade. (Rhode Island had the highest proportion of slaves of any New England state and its merchants were heavily involved in the slave trade.)

Thanks for posting this information. People need to know the extent to which New Englanders were involved in the slave trade.

Jefferson’s original draft of the Declaration of Independence condemned George III for vetoing an attempt to end the slave trade. That was taken out by Congress, probably mainly because it would open the Americans to ridicule since they weren’t proposing to free any of their slaves, but in Jefferson’s opinion, also because some of the delegates from the northern colonies had a tender conscience on the matter because of their involvement in the slave trade. At least that was how he remembered it many years later.
