If he was always drunk, maybe no one noticed.
Like me at work. I interviewed drunk and stay drunk all day. no one noticed.... Same when I got my driver’s license.
Some people perform better under the influence.
My grandfather was one of them. He was forman of a big shipyard sending ships out to World War 2 and he was always drunk. Owner of the place said he did a better kob drunk than anyone else did sober.
So my IIrish Catholic grandmother divorced him—unheard of back then. She moved to New Orleans, lived in the Garden District and had a wonderful life.
Yes, Mickey Mantle admitted to playing baseball while drunk or hungover, often to cope with chronic pain from injuries, a common issue for him and other players of his era who had limited pain management, though he later regretted his heavy drinking and its effects, famously stating, “Don’t be like me” at his final press conference. While he downplayed the frequency, claiming it happened only a few times, it was well-known among teammates, who often covered for him, as he was a high-functioning alcoholic who still produced incredible feats, like hitting home runs even when impaired.
