Lack of a VLS system is not necessarily a bad thing. Form follows function. It all depends on what role is envisioned for the new ship class. I also don't know what weapons/sensors are in development that are meant to be installed on the ships. Ship hulls are the long lead/ long service life portion of the weapons system.
