The suspect in the "targeted" shooting of two National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C., will now face charges upgraded to first-degree murder after President Donald Trump announced the death of one of the victims late Thursday, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said Friday.
"There are certainly many more charges to come, but we are upgrading the initial charges of assault to murder in the first degree," Pirro said Friday morning on Fox News' "Fox & Friends."
The suspected gunman, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was previously charged with three counts of assault with the intent to kill while armed and criminal possession of a weapon, officials said during a press conference on Thursday.
Lakanwal is accused of firing at two National Guard members, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, on Wednesday afternoon.
The suspect allegedly "opened fire without provocation, ambush style," struck one of the victims, leaned over and shot the individual again, before firing at the other National Guard member "several times," Pirro said on Thursday.
Video obtained by The Wall Street Journal shows the moment of the shooting. The footage briefly shows Lakanwal brandishing a gun before he runs off-camera. A National Guardsmen can also be seen in the video running and reloading his gun.

And then what? A defective gold-plated ankle bracelet?
I sadly have to disagree with Trump who said “he went nuts” “he went cuckoo” about the killer.
Someone said the insanity or mental defective defense is a likely cop out.
Also, a legal expert (they say) on one show said it will be around TWO YEARS before the perp goes to court.
Welcome to America.
Do they have the death penalty in DC?
Maybe when a rat ๐ president comes along, the dude will get a presidential pardon. Nothing the rats ๐ do, would surprise me.
Knowing them, they will run him for office.
I wonder what specific Afghan ethnic group he was from?
DC federal judge will drop any and all charges.
And the bastard will win.
how many shots were fired.
The left is usually all over the " Guns kill people"
. Has the MSM changed their stories to be anti Afghan instead of anti guns?
.
Are we being fed an approved narrative instead of the truth?
Have you questioned all the answers and answered all the questions?
Never accept the first story you are told.
S&W. .357 revolver. But this, according to RotoReuters, so YMMV.
Personally, I’d like to see swift justice, like we’re told about. If this goes to trial, we’ll be here years from now talking about how deprived the Afghan man and his family are. Hang him on TV next week for all to see. Then round up all the Afghans and deport them back to the hole they came from.
Oh it’s mentioned alright. He had a 357 magnum. And you are supposed to feel sorry for him. He couldn’t find a job because his work permit expired. You see his visa had expired and he needed to get out of the US and return to his own country. Instead of accepting that he no longer had a right to be here, he got mad and lashed our like a toddler. He should have gone home and got a job there doing whatever people do in Afghanistan.
I see a crooked judge dismissing the case for typical commie reasons.
Has a Democrat judge cut him loose yet because a Trump US Atty charged him?
.357 revolver
all the laws against non citizens owning fire arms in the U.S. didn't stop him.
When are the anti guns people gonna realize laws dont work for some people, criminals dont follow the law!!
He shot military people, why not give him a military trial and military justice? For a combatant out of uniform (and jihadis consider themselves combatants) that justice would be quick execution by firing squad.
The perp should have to listen to Christmas music during his remaining days on Earth.
